I interview Stephanie Lutton Carey who is a mechanical engineer here at USF she is also a foundations of engineering teacher where she explained most of this information to us during a seminar.
According to Stephanie there is a mechanical engineering is a very popular profession that is in high demand right now where most people graduating USF with a BS in mechanical engineering are making around $55,000 right out of college. Also the job market is one of the most secure out of all of the engineering disciplines only second to civil engineering and that she believes that job opportunities and job security will remain high even during this economic downturn. She also said that while I did not need a masters degrees to find a job it would make it much easier and my income would be substantially higher that if i just went after i got my Bachelors.
She also went on to say that a very good way to make myself more desirable to companies was to get involved in the mechanical engineering society here on campus and to actively participate in their activities and competitions. She also said that i should start applying for internships to different local companies so that I can become accustomed to what mechanical engineers do. Stephanie didn't think there would be much that could hinder me in getting a job unless i did poorly in school and did not apply for jobs while still in school but other than this she said I should be able to find a job.
Stephanie also said that most of the students who graduate with a BS in mechanical engineering tend to go to places like automotive shops, national defense companies. When i told her that I wanted to become a gun manufacturer she thought that I was in the correct field to do what I wanted and that several of my classes could relate to the processes of making firearms such as working with machine parts and working with different metals.
